About East End

Neglected and rundown for much of its history, the East End has been transformed into an atmospheric and highly fashionable part of London. It refers to the boroughs of London found north of the River Thames and east of the boundaries of Central London.

Aesthetically the East End has retained its working class roots, with red terraces houses, photogenic warehouses and old railway arches. Over the last decade, the area's traditions have merged with an incoming crowd of artists and underground styles. The architecture has been filled with pop-up shops, vintage markets, vibrant graffiti, and a diverse multiculturalism. While a certain gentrification is taking place, exploring the boroughs make for a fascinating insight into alternative London.

The East End is composed of many small boroughs and the visitor experience is more about exploring a borough than seeing a specific attraction. Richly multicultural and wonderfully atmospheric, Shoreditch and Brick Lane provide a perfect introduction to the East End. Many industrial buildings have been converted into markets and bars, making this the most popular area with tourists. It's also the closest to Central London. Dalston and Bethnel Green are equally vibrant. Hoxton and Hackney are more off the beaten track and have fully retained their local flavour.

Each of these boroughs are filled with street markets, traditional pubs, and local restaurants. Much of their charm is found by exploring at random, making them an ideal place to stay for visitors looking to escape the mainstream tourist crowds.

Further east in the East End are Stratford and Docklands, which were fully redeveloped for the 2012 Olympics. Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is free to visit and the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf reflect the area's futuristic transition.

The East End is connected by the Docklands Light Railway, along with London Overground rail services and red double-decker buses. Liverpool Street and Stratford International are the East End's major transport hubs, connecting the London Underground with local rail services.

Cockney rhyming slang originates from the East End and many colloquial sayings remain in use, for example, apples and pears meaning stairs, and dog and bone translating to telephone.
