About French Market

Stretching along the Mississippi River from Cafe du Monde to the New Orleans Mint, the French Market is the oldest of its kind in the United States. It was founded as a Native American trading post before Europeans arrived, but is now home to restaurants serving quintessential New Orleans cuisine, tourist-oriented stalls and a weekend flea market.

Successive waves of immigrants from Europe, Africa and the Caribbean have played an influential role in the French Market, bringing with them everything from African coffee beans to Choctaw Indian spices used in local gumbo soup. Today fresh produce is largely confined to the Farmer’s Market Pavilion where a range of eateries can also be found and it’s here that the annual Creole Tomato Festival is held. Local artists and craftspeople showcase their unique goods throughout the market, while an outdoor Flea Market is located at its northern end. Cafe du Monde at its southern extent has been serving beignets, cafe au lait and chicory coffee since 1862, while local oysters, gumbo soup and jambalaya are all dished up by nearby vendors. The historic pedestrian plaza of Dutch Alley includes an artists co-op and performance tent where free concerts are held, as well as a visitor’s centre for the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park. It’s here that special events such as the French Quarter Festival are showcased, celebrating the area’s rich history.

The French Market can be accessed from the Dumaine, Ursulines and French Market tram stops, as well as bus stops along Decatur and North Peters Streets. It’s also within a short walk of Jackson Square, St. Louis Cathedral and Bourbon Street within New Orleans’ French Quarter.

The French established a market where Cafe du Monde now stands in 1791 with vendors selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meats and seafood. In the late 19th century it was re-structured by one of the country’s first African-American architects, Joseph Abelard, before being destroyed by a hurricane in 1915 and later renovated into retail shops and boutiques.
