Chernihiv is a launchpad to the region and is a natural starting point for travellers. The historic centre, also known as Dytynets Park, is dotted with centuries-old churches and cathedrals. Gaze up at the golden domes and turrets of Transfiguration Cathedral and admire the beautiful Ukrainian Baroque façade of St. Catherine's Church. Red Square, or “Krasna Ploshcha” as it’s known by locals, is in the heart of the city and is lined with handsome heritage buildings.

Venture out the city to discover Trinity Monastery, a centuries-old complex founded in the 1100s. It’s topped by a 58-metre-tall belltower that you can climb for sweeping views over the monastery and surrounding countryside. Saint Anthony’s Caves are a short walk from the monastery and feature 315 metres of underground passageways and caverns. Some of the oldest tunnels date back to the 11th century. After the monastery was invaded by Mongolian warriors, the caves were used to store the bones of murdered monks.

Postcard-perfect Mezyn is set on the banks of the River Desna and will charm you with its brightly painted houses and a beautiful setting in the countryside. Visit the small but engaging Mezyn Archaeological Museum to find out more about the village’s ancient past. You can also admire artefacts collected from a nearby Palaeolithic site.

The village is a gateway to Mezynsky National Park, a protected nature reserve where you can discover lush forests and floodplains. Marked trails wind through the park and are great for spotting birds and wildlife.
