Considered one of the most beautiful river canyons in Europe, the Verdon Gorge stretches for 25 kilometres between the towns of Castellane and Moustiers-Sainte-Marie. Its 700-metre-high limestone walls are carved by the Verdon River, which flows into the stunning Lac de Sainte-Croix.
Soak up the spectacular views on a scenic drive along the Gorges du Verdon circuit, which follows the rim of the gorge. Stroll along the Blanc-Martel trail to the aptly-named Point Sublime lookout or rent a kayak to explore the lower gorge and turquoise waters of Lac de Sainte Croix.
The Verdon Gorge is renowned for rock climbing, with endless walls, cracks and pillars to explore. Birdwatchers should keep their eyes peeled for griffon and black vultures, while cultural enthusiasts can explore the handicraft displays at the Musee de la Faience and Musee des Tourneurs sur Bois.
Getting there
Verdon Gorge is best accessed from the town of Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, which is just inland from the French Riviera. It’s around 2.5 hours’ drive from Nice Cote d'Azur Airport and just over two hours from Marseille Provence Airport.
