A cone geyser situated inside Yellowstone National Park, Old Faithful is one of Wyoming’s renowned national treasures. At least one million eruptions have been recorded since Yellowstone became the first national park in the world. The geyser and affiliated Old Faithful Inn are core components of the Old Faithful Historic District.
When visiting Old Faithful, you can expect an eruption to take place every 44 to 120 minutes around the clock. You’ll see about 14,000 to 32,000 litres of boiling water spraying at heights up to 56 metres. Eruptions only last from 90 seconds to five minutes, so keep your camera ready.
Stop by the visitor centre to learn about Old Faithful’s history, geyser statistics and predicted eruption times. The geyser-viewing area is kid-friendly with benches and a ranger station. You’ll also find restaurants, gift shops, hotels and boardwalks near the visitor centre.
Getting There
Old Faithful is perched inside the Upper Geyser Basin of Yellowstone, which spreads across the park’s south-west section. It’s accessible by car using the Grand Loop from Madison Junction and there’s parking available near the viewing platforms. Guided bus tours depart from many lodging properties in West Yellowstone.
