Things to do in Chiayi County
Alishan National Scenic Area protects a unique landscape of ancient forests, lush valleys and rugged mountains. Hike along remote trails, ride the ultra-scenic Alishan Forest Railway and discover the rich cultures and traditions of the Tsou indigenous people.
The Southwest Coast National Scenic Area features a patchwork of marshlands, lagoons, sandbanks and wildlife-rich rivers. The area is a birder’s paradise, with the chance to spot dozens of endemic and migratory species.
Siraya National Scenic Area is famous for its enormous dams and reservoirs. Watch water cascading down the walls of enormous Zengwen Dam and admire pastel pink cherry blossoms in the Wusanto Reservoir Scenic Area. Tour one of the local coffee plantations to find out more about the region’s flourishing industry. The Ping Huang Coffee Museum in Taibao also features fantastic exhibits on the “bean to bar” process.
Visit the bustling harbours of Budai and Dongshi to learn more about Taiwan’s booming fishing industry. Stroll around colourful Dongshi Fisherman's Wharf and marvel at a bounty of fresh seafood at the Budai Tourist Fish Market. Nearby is Aogu Wetland Forest Park, where you can enjoy a leisurely raft ride along the Puzi River. Combine your trip with a visit to the Budai Salt Fields.
The Mei-Ling Fine Arts Museum in Puzi City showcases works by local and international artists, as well as rotating exhibits featuring art by Tibetan and Mongolian talent. In Taibao, the sprawling Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum features several exhibition halls showcasing paintings, sculptures and cultural artefacts. Stroll around the landscaped gardens and walk across the impressive 142-metre-long, steel arch Zhimei Bridge.
Getting around Chiayi County
Trains are a fast and efficient way to get around Chiayi County, with stations located in Taibao, Dalin, Minxiong, Shuishang and other major towns and cities. Rental cars offer the freedom to explore Chiayi County at your own pace. The county is a 45-minute drive from Tainan City and 1.5 hours from Taichung City.
