Place Massena is Nice’s main public square and one of the most historic places in the city famed for its monuments, old buildings and spectacular events and festivals each year. The square’s numerous interesting historical monuments and beautiful old architecture make it a fantastic place for a sightseeing walk, while its ideal location close by to many of Nice’s main attractions such as the Promenade des Anglais and Albert I Garden make it an ideal base to go on and explore the wonders of Nice.
The heritage sites in Place Massena are one of its main draws, with a huge array of historic buildings and monuments to be seen. The square is also a very scenic place lined with palm trees and stone pines which make for a pleasant atmosphere. Some of the yearly events and festivals each year bring Place Massena to life including the Corso Carnavalesque Carnival and numerous festivals during the summer. Place Massena is within close proximity to many of Nice’s most famous spots including the Promenade des Anglais stretching along the waterfront.
Place Massena is situated centrally in Nice’s Old Town, known locally as Vieux Nice, which makes getting to it fairly simple from other central areas of Nice. The city has an extensive bus network which can take travellers all around Nice and even onwards to places like Cannes, or active visitors may consider utilising the Velo Bleu bicycle rental system to get to Place Massena. Travellers flying in can arrive at Nice Airport, one of France’s busiest airports operating flights all around the world. There are multiple buses capable of taking visitors into the city centre.
The square was first divided into two separate parts in 1824 and has been one of Nice’s most iconic places ever since. Place Massena has long been the choice location for important public events and festivals over the years and hosts many events to this day including Bastille Day celebrations every 14th July.
