Originally built in the 7th century, Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a UNESCO-listed Buddhist landmark in the city of Xi’an. It was constructed to house Buddhist sutras and figurines brought from India by the Chinese Buddhist monk, Xuanzang, and now forms part of the Da Ci'en Temple complex.
Admire the seven-tiered architecture of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, which rises to 64 metres high and has a slight, yet visible lean to the west. Step inside to see the engraved statues of Buddha that line the interior walls and were created by Tang Dynasty artist, Yan Liben.
Follow the spiral staircase to the top of the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and soak up the sweeping views across Xi’an, then step through the entrance of the Da Ci’en Temple, which is guarded by two lion statues. Explore the surrounding gardens and squares, one of which boasts the largest musical fountain in Asia.
Getting there
Big Wild Goose Pagoda is a 15-minute drive from the centre of Xi’an and can be accessed by numerous bus routes that stop outside the temple complex. Xi'an Xianyang International Airport is around an hour away by car.
