About Cabarete

Cabarete is the Dominican Republic's adventure-sports capital, offering world-class surfing, exhilarating kiteboarding and gorgeous beaches. It's set on a sheltered bay protected by a shallow coral reef and features luxury hotels and an enticing Caribbean dining scene.

Things to do

Bordering the town centre, Playa Cabarete is great for swimming and sunbathing. If you're feeling adventurous, sign up for kitesurfing, windsurfing or wakeboarding lessons. Rolling waves make Playa Encuentro a favourite with experienced surfers, while Bozo Beach is great for beginners and body boarders.

Calle Principal is dotted with lively cafes, restaurants and bars. Mojito Bar is a local favourite, serving freshly tossed salads and tasty vegetarian fare. Castle Club, an eclectic mansion nestled in the mountains, offers a unique dining experience, with many of the ingredients grown on the property.

Descend into the legendary caves of Parque Nacional El Choco, a lush nature reserve set in the Cordillera Septentrional foothills. Guided tours offer a unique chance to admire sparkling stalactites, explore narrow passageways and swim in crystalline pools. You can also sign up for boat cruises on the lagoon, horseback riding tours and birdwatching treks.

Adrenalin junkies will love the 30-metre-high rappel down the face of Magic Mushroom, one of the most beautiful waterfalls of the Rio Blanco. You can also explore Cabarete on back-country ATV adventures that take you to local rum distilleries, cigar shacks and hidden beaches.

Getting around

Cabarete is easy to get around on foot or by using a bicycle. Local buses, also known as "gua-guas" will get you to destinations along the northern coast. Major bus companies depart from the depot in Sosúa, 15 kilometres west of Cabarete.
