Where to stay near City Botanic Gardens

About City Botanic Gardens

The capital of Queensland is often overlooked in the tourism circuit, but more and more visitors are discovering what Brisbane has to offer. Just one of its many attractions, the City Botanical Gardens is a riverside collection of scenic ponds and carefully crafted botanical collections.

Visitors can explore the City Botanic Gardens with a guide on an hour-long walk, or on their own. Either way, top highlights include the Bamboo Grove with 23 different species of bamboo, the historic Walter Hill Fountain, and the bronze sculpture of Jemmy Morrill, the sole survivor of a Great Barrier Reef shipwreck who went on to act as a liaison between Indigenous Australians and European settlers.

The gardens are accessible by foot from the Goodwill Bridge, the Parliament House entrance on George Street, or at the intersection of Alice and Edward Streets. The free Loop bus stops on George Street and Alice Street, while there are ferry stops at the rear of Parliament House and on Edward Street.

The City Botanic Gardens have more than simple beauty behind their creation. This riverside site originally provided crops for the early Brisbane settlers, officially becoming the City Botanic Gardens in 1855. The first curator, Walter Hill, tested crops and plants for their ability to grow in a subtropical climate and is responsible for bringing a wide range of produce to Queensland, including pineapples, mangoes, sugar cane, tobacco, coffee, and much more.

City Botanic Gardens travel FAQs

Located in Brisbane, the Boggo Road Gaol Museum was once known as one of the most notorious prisons in Australia. Named after the road that led to it, for 109 years it was the dominant feature of Queensland’s skyline and became famous for all the wrong reasons. A long history of intense rooftop riots, hunger strikes, protests, and escapes led to the Number Two Division of Boggo Road Gaol’s closure in 1992.

Reopening as a cultural heritage tourist attraction, the Boggo Road Gaol Museum educates visitors on the history of the prison and brings real-life prison stories to life through guided tours. Originally opened in 1883, it has been over 25 years since the Number Two Division closed due to protests. Now visitors can explore the very same brick walls that became home to the prison’s “Lifers” and held famous inmates including the Whiskey Au Go Go firebombers and the “Houdini of Boggo Road”, who escaped the prison twice.

Visitors can choose their adventure with five different themed tours that range from an Ex-Inmate/Ex-officer led by a former prisoner or officer to an Escapes Tour that highlights the dramatic escape plans of former prisoners. Night and Ghost Tours are also available where guides detail the creepy ghost stories of the prison.

Open Thursday to Sunday weekly, admission to Boggo Road Gaol is via a guided tour that lasts 1 and a half hours with unique commentary, authentic storytelling, and a chance to explore the prison gatehouse, exercise yards, and one of the original cellblocks.
