Surrounded by rugged mountains, Danyang is a picturesque resort town and adventure retreat near Seoul. It’s on the doorstep of both the Sobaeksan and Woraksan national parks, as well as the scenic waters of Lake Chungju.
Explore the forested valleys and ancient Buddhist sites of Woraksan National Park. Follow the hiking trail past the Shilla-era fortress of Deokjusan-seong and up to the Deokju-sa temple, before continuing to the Buddha-carved rock of Ma-aebul and summit of Yeong-bong.
Danyang is also within easy access of Sobaeksan National Park, which encompasses one of the highest mountains in the country, Little White Mountain. Admire the wildflowers and royal azaleas while trekking along the slopes of Birobong Peak or follow the trail to the picturesque Seokcheonpokpo Falls and Seonghyeolsa Temple.
Explore the spectacular limestone features of the Gosu Cave, nicknamed the “Underground Palace”. Admire the aptly-named Lion Rock that guards the cave, then wander along the metal walkways through its cool and beautifully-lit caverns to see the Octopus Rock and Eagle Rock.
Danyang is a hub for adventure sports, including paragliding, motor hang gliding and white-water rafting. Test your shooting skills while playing paintball or clay shooting or opt for a scenic cruise aboard the Chungjuho Lake Pleasure Boat.
Danyang is around two hours by train from the centre of Seoul and 4.5 hours by train from Incheon International Airport. Buses connect Danyang with towns in the surrounding region and there are seasonal boats across Chungju Lake to the city of Chungju.
