About Husum

The offshore mud flats around Husum serve as an incredibly important habitat for wading birds and other forms of wildlife. Start at the National Park Haus Husum for an orientation session to learn about Husum’s migratory and native birdlife, then join a guided walking tour out across the flats.

Back on dry ground, the Schifffahrts museum Nordfriesland is Husum’s maritime museum. Much of the site is open-air, and the fascinating collection includes historic wrecks which have been recovered from the bottom of the sea, model boats, maps, anchors and even a working lighthouse.

The Schlossvor Husum is Husum’s castle and the former residence of the Duke of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf. Today it is both a museum and a cultural centre, with regular concerts and theatrical performances held within the extensive grounds. Highlights inside the castle include the original Knights Hall, stucco ceilings, and a large collection of paintings, most of which date back to the 17th century.

Those with interest in German literature may also want to visit the house museum of novelist Theodor Storm. Storm was born here in 1817 and is considered to be one of the most important figures in German realism.
