Things to do in Kabul

Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan, home to some of the country’s top cultural attractions. Admire a treasure trove of ancient Greek tablets, Islamic bronzes and Buddhist relics at the excellent Kabul Museum. The National Gallery showcases historic masterpieces alongside contemporary works.

Stepping into Pul-e Khishti Bazaar, you’ll be overwhelmed by the scents, sounds and colours. The open-air market is lined with stalls selling sparkling gold jewellery, silk scarves, colourful glassware and fragrant spices. You’ll know you’re close to the Ka Faroshi Bird Market when you start to hear the enchanting sounds of songbirds.

Magnificent Babur’s Gardens was laid out by the mighty Mughal ruler in the 16th century and continues to captivate visitors. The 11-hectare oasis features a series of terraces leading up to the white marble tomb of Babur. As you ascend, you’ll notice the beautiful walnut, mulberry, cherry and apricot trees.

Visit Ghazi Stadium on a Friday afternoon to cheer on local Afghani football teams. The stadium also moonlights as a venue for “buzkashi” matches, which is a popular Afghani sport played on horseback.

You’ll love eating your way through Kabul’s fantastic restaurants. Be sure to try local specialties like Murgh Afghani, an indulgent chicken curry made with cashews, poppy seeds, cream, butter and black pepper. Wash it down with a cup of spicy chai tea.

Getting around Kabul
