About Kwabenyan

Nestled in the hills of Accra, Kwabenya is an upmarket suburb known for its gated communities and estates. It’s on the doorstep of several tertiary institutions, including Ashesi University and the University of Ghana Legon campus, which is home to a tranquil garden popular with photographers.

Things to do in Kwabenyan

Kwabenya makes an attractive base for discovering the sights of Accra, including the colourful stalls of Makola Market, where you’ll find everything from fresh produce to beaded jewellery. Gaze up at the Black Star Gate, which is topped by a five-pointed star representing Africa and forms part of Independence Square. Nearby is the striking mausoleum of Kwame Nkrumah that honours Ghana’s first president.

Archaeological findings, ethnographic artefacts and artworks are exhibited at the National Museum, which opened in 1957 to coincide with Ghana’s independence celebrations. You can get up close to traditional Ghanaian musical instruments, chiefs’ regalia and gold weights, as well as textiles and pottery. The museum also showcases objects gifted from other African countries, such as carvings from the Congo and masks from the Ivory coast.

For a day on the sand, head to popular Labadi Beach, which is backed by palm trees and a scattering of bars serving refreshing drinks and street food. Further afield is Kokrobite Beach, where reggae and cultural drumming performances are held on weekends. Nearby is Densu Delta, a protected reserve encompassing lagoons, marshes and dunes where egrets come to nest.
