The highest lake in Yunnan, Lugu Lake is a spectacular alpine lake framed by mountains on the border between the Ninglang and Yanyuan counties. It’s known as the “Mother Lake” by the ethnic Mosuo people, who inhabit its shores and are renowned for their matriarchal traditions.
Photograph the magnificent landscape of Lugu Lake from the shore, then jump aboard a local boat made from thick logs to explore its sparkling waters and five islands. Go birdwatching on Heiwaw Island and walk along the stone path that links Lugu Lake’s central peninsula to a tiny island just offshore.

Getting there
Lugu Lake is around 1.5 hours’ drive from Ninglang Luguhu Airport, which has regular services from Chongqing, Kunming and Chengdu. Lijiang is around five hours drive from the lake, with regular buses making the journey.
