Things to do in Mangalia

Walk along the rocky pier to the postcard-perfect Genoese Lighthouse. Built in the 1950s, it has a retro feel and features a white façade and sky-blue roof. The end of the pier boasts sweeping views over the harbour.

Mix things up with a day in a neighbouring resort. Mangalia is a short drive from nearby beach resorts with planet-inspired names like Jupiter, Saturn and Venus. To the south is Vama Veche, a laid-back beach town and a haven for artists, musicians and free spirits. Sunbathe on the beach by day and hit up the raucous party scene after dark.

Stroll along the banks of Balta Limanu lake to Limanu Cave. Historians theorise the Dacians used the cave to hide from the Romans in 44 BC. Hire a local guide to explore the cave, which features a labyrinth of tunnels.

Dine at local restaurants and try specialties from the Black Sea Coast like “papricaș de peste”, fish stewed in a spicy paprika sauce. Seafood-based dishes like “ciorba de peste” fish soup seasoned with herbs and “rapane” Black Sea snails cooked in a butter and white wine sauce feature heavily on local menus. Wash down your meal with a glass of “tuica” plum brandy, the national drink of Romania. “Socata” elderflower juice is a popular alcohol-free option.
