About Neve Tzedek

Neve Tzedek is a neighbourhood on the periphery of the ancient port of Jaffa in south-western Tel Aviv, Israel. It was the first official Jewish district to be built outside the old city walls of Jaffa in the late 19th century. With a quirky architectural style, an abundance of upmarket restaurants, wine bars and galleries, it offers a village like atmosphere away from central Tel Aviv.

To gain insight into the district head to Rokach Street. It was named after the head of the community Shimon Rokach who had the vision to build the neighbourhood of Neve Tzedek. Rokach House is a fascinating museum where visitors can delve deeper into the beginnings of the district and discover the family who shaped it. A short walk away, Nachum Gutman Museum of Art showcases mosaic works from the famous painter sculptor and author. The main streets of Neve Tzedek are lined with artists and ceramic studios where visitors can browse creative offerings and even purchase a souvenir or two. The galleries sit alongside trendy bars and cafes, boutique accommodations and independent craft shops. For a change of pace, it only takes around 20 minutes to walk into Old Jaffa. Here visitors can explore the old city parks and gardens, discover St. Archangel Michael Monastery or relax in a charming cafe by Jaffa Port.

Visitors can access Neve Tzedek on foot from central Tel Aviv in around 45 minutes. Energetic travellers can make good use of the 70 kilometres of cycle routes the city offers. Alternatively, buses operate from the Tel Aviv centre to HaMered Street and Eilat Street, both a short stroll from Neve Tzedek centre. Taxis and Uber services are both available throughout the city.

The neighbourhood of Neve Tzedek was founded by a group of Mizrahi Jewish families who moved out of Jaffa due to overcrowding. The new quarter was constructed with low rise buildings in Art Nouveau and Bauhaus designs. The district became popular with local creatives who were drawn to its bohemian charm. In recent years, it has become an affluent suburb of Tel Aviv with theatres, museums, boutiques and charming eateries.
