Things to do in Port Alfred
Bask on the honey-coloured sand of Kelly’s Beach. The Blue Flag beach is set on the Kowie River estuary and features clean water and rolling waves. Scenic viewpoints dot the coast and are great for spotting dolphins and whales. East Beach is on the other side of the river mouth and is much quieter than its popular neighbour.
Tick off the Big 5 at Kariega Game Reserve. In addition to lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalo and leopards, the 11,500-hectare park is home to giraffes, zebras, hippos and other South African icons. Spot hyenas prowling through the grasslands and identify more than 300 species of birds, including malachite sunbirds and pygmy kingfishers.
Year-round sunshine makes Port Alfred a great base for outdoor adventures on the Eastern Cape. Quad bike through the sand dunes or take things slow on a scenic cruise up the Kowie River. The golf courses are excellent and treat players to emerald-green fairways and beautiful scenery.
Port Alfred was founded by English settlers in the 19th century and has retained its European charm. Parts of the town feel like a traditional English fishing village, complete with a historic lighthouse. You can find everything from family-friendly cafes to late-night jazz bars in the lively town centre.
Getting around Port Alfred
Port Alfred is pedestrian-friendly and easy to get around on foot. The town is in the Eastern Cape province, a two-hour drive from Gqeberha and East London. Rental cars offer the freedom to visit Port Alfred and explore the Eastern Cape at your own pace. Port Elizabeth International Airport is a two-hour drive away.
