Get your retail fix in the duty-free stores of Las Palmas, stroll around charming Puerto de Mogán and admire the 15th-century architecture of Vegueta. While the interior of Gran Canaria is mountainous and traversed by hiking trails, the coastline is dotted with white sand and black lava beaches.
Explore desert-like Fuerteventura. Located around 100 kilometres off the north-west coast of Africa, Fuerteventura is renowned for its white sandy beaches and abundance of water sports. Test your kite surfing skills in Corralejo Natural Park and swim in the stunning lagoons of El Cotillo before cruising to uninhabited Lobos Island. Historic, whitewashed buildings rise amidst the semi-desert landscapes of Betancuria, the original capital of the Kingdom of the Canary Islands.
Visit Lanzarote’s Timanfaya National Park. Encompassing the south-west of Lanzarote, Timanfaya National Park forms part of the island’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Its otherworldly landscapes were created by volcanic eruptions in the 18th century and it’s the only park in Spain that is entirely geological. Hiking trails and camel routes traverse the park, with a highlight being the dramatic Mountains of Fire.
Getting around Las Palmas
Gran Canaria Airport is the main aviation gateway to the Province of Las Palmas and has flights to destinations across Europe and North Africa. Both Fuerteventura Airport and Lanzarote Airport also have flights throughout Europe. Ferries connect from Gran Canaria to the other major islands in the Province of Las Palmas while renting a car is the most convenient way of getting around on land.
