About Saltstraumen

Saltstraumen showcases the incredible power of the Norwegian Sea tides. Set just north of the Arctic Circle, the natural phenomenon sees more than 400 million cubic meters of water flow through the narrow strait and create a powerful whirlpool known as a “maelstrom” by locals.

Things to do

Boat trips out to the Saltstraumen are an iconic Norwegian experience and get you up close with the maelstrom. It’s one of the most powerful marine whirlpools in the world, with water moving as fast as 10 metres per second. Visit during the full moon to experience the strongest tidal action. You can also unlock fantastic views of the whirlpool from the Saltstraumbrua Bridge.

Visit the Saltstraumen Museum to find out more about the unique history and heritage of the famous natural phenomenon. You can learn about the Stone Age settlements found along the banks of the strait and the diverse marine life that live in the area.

The lively city of Bodo is a great base for visiting Saltstraumen, as well as exploring Northern Norway and the Lofoten Islands. Historic gems like 13th-century Bodin Kirke recall the city’s ancient past. Magnificent Bodo Cathedral, with its cavernous nave and freestanding tower, is a feat of modern architecture.

The islands off the coast of Saltstraumen are home to one of the largest populations of white-tailed sea eagles in the world, making the city a bucket list destination for birdwatchers. Deep-sea fishing charters offer a chance to reel in trophy-sized halibut, cod and wolf fish.
