About Sierre

A backdrop of rolling vineyards and snow-capped mountains make Sierre one of the prettiest towns in Valais. The region produces exceptional wine and is surrounded by more than 100 estates. Stroll around the historic centre, visit winemaking museums and amble along countryside trails. Year-round sunshine is the icing on the cake.

Things to do in Sierre

The historic centre will charm you with its centuries-old castles, churches and chateaus. Admire the beautiful 17th-century Town Hall and stroll along Rue du Bourg, a picturesque thoroughfare lined with cafes, boutiques and wine stores. Lac de Géronde is a short walk from the historic centre and features a rocky beach, grassy sunbathing area and heated outdoor swimming pools.

Learn about the region’s long history of winemaking at Musée Valaisan de la Vigne et du Vin. The museum occupies a 17th-century chateau and showcases grape presses, oak barrels and other wine-related artefacts. Don’t miss the cellar, where you can sample and buy more than 600 local wines. Fendant, a full-bodied and fruity white made with Chasselas grapes, is a Sierre specialty.

Stretch your legs on the scenic Sentier Viticole. The six-kilometre trail starts at Musée Valaisan de la Vigne et du Vin and winds through the countryside to the neighbouring town of Salgesch. Along the way, you’ll pass dozens of educational panels that offer more information on the region’s proud viticultural heritage.

Wine isn’t the only specialty in Sierre. Local restaurants will tantalise your palate with dishes from the Valais region. Enjoy dishes like tomato fondue topped with melted Gruyere cheese and served with a slab of “walliser roggenbrot” rye bread.
