Things to do in Spoleto

Follow the sweeping stone staircase down to Duomo, the city’s spectacular cathedral. Built from rare white stone, it combines elements of Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. Inside, you’ll be dazzled by the gleaming marble floor and colourful frescoes painted by famous Italian artists.

Ponte delle Torri spans 230 metres across a forested gorge and is a spectacular feat of architecture. Built from locally quarried limestone in the 14th century, it’s supported by 10 enormous arches. You can’t walk across the bridge, but you can enjoy fantastic views from several nearby lookouts.

Rocca Albornoziana towers over Spoleto and commands an imposing position on a grass-covered hilltop. The 14th-century stronghold houses Museo Nazionale del Ducato, where you can learn about the rich history and heritage of the region. Highlights of the collection include jewel-encrusted Byzantine jewellery and ancient Roman relics.

From fine-dining restaurants to casual trattorias, Spoleto offers fantastic dining options. Try local Umbrian dishes like “impastoiata” polenta with beans, sharp pecorino cheese and “porchetta” roast pork with crispy crackling. Finish your meal with a glass of Passito dessert wine from a local vineyard. Bakeries will tempt you with traditional “crescionda” cake made with amaretti biscuits, dark chocolate and aniseed liqueur.

Getting around Spoleto
