Attracting artists, writers and sunseekers, Trieste is one of Italy’s most enchanting cities. It cascades down a rocky plateau to the sparkling Adriatic Sea and is almost entirely surrounded by Slovenia. Whether you want to relax at its Belle Epoque-style cafes, shop on the Corso Italia strip or sip your way through Collio wine country, Trieste is a fascinating introduction to Italy’s northern coast.
Most travellers gravitate towards Trieste’s medieval Old City. It’s a great place for a stroll, with cobblestone alleyways lined with sorbet-coloured buildings. Along the way you can stop by sights like the beautiful San Giusto Cathedral, known for its cavernous nave and beautiful mosaic flooring.
Interested in architecture? In the neoclassical Austrian Quarter you’ll find a treasure trove of buildings inspired by Viennese palaces. Just out of town is the neo-Gothic Castello di Miramare, a magnificent clifftop castle commissioned by Archduke Maximilian of Austria.
Facing the ocean, Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia is one of Europe’s most beautiful plazas. It’s flanked by the magnificent Palazzo del Municipio, as well as Trieste's 19th-century City Hall. It’s a great spot to people watch, admire a fiery sunset or devour a scoop of artisan gelato.
To the north of the city is the elegant Borgo Teresiano District, anchored by the gleaming Canal Grande. This neighbourhood boasts some of Trieste’s trendiest bars, as well as a string of its famous seafood buffet restaurants.
With its medieval streets and steep incline, the easiest way to get around Trieste is on foot. Local buses and taxis make the trip from Trieste Centrale railway station to the waterfront in a matter of minutes, while public shuttle boats run from Stazione Marittima to nearby Muggia throughout the year.
