About Tyre

Named after the rocky peninsula on which it’s built, the ancient city of Tyre is the legendary birthplace of Greek mythological queens Europa and Dido. It combines beautifully-preserved Roman ruins with picturesque beaches and delicious local cuisine focused on fresh seafood.

Things to do in Tyre

Tyre boasts some of the most impressive Roman ruins in Lebanon, most of which are clustered within the Al Bass Archaeological Site. Wander through its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hippodrome and admire the well-preserved sarcophagi in the Necropolis.

The Hot Spring Ruins are found within the Christian district of Tyre, known for its narrow streets and historic residences. The rocky beach of Al Jamal lies at the southwestern tip of the Christian district, where the ruins of an old Phoenician port and seafood restaurants overlook the water.

The beach in Tyre is famed as being one of the cleanest and most beautiful in Lebanon, with families flocking here to swim in the warm waters. Rent a fishing boat to go snorkelling around the rocky offshore islets or jump onto a jet ski.

Don’t forget to visit the Lebanese Marine and Wildlife Museum, where species found in and around the waters of Lebanon are showcased. Learn about the sharks, dolphins and crabs that inhabit this stretch of the Mediterranean, as well as 30 different species of hard and soft corals.

Getting around Tyre

Tyre is just over one hour’s drive south of Beirut and connected by air-conditioned buses and minibuses. Tyre is pleasant to explore on foot, with the beaches and main streets close to one another. Taxis are readily available to access the Al Bass Archaeological Site.
