About Alpbach

One of Austria’s most beautiful towns, Alpbach is nestled in the Kitzbühel Alps in the state of Tyrol. The area has been settled since at least the 11th century and became an important copper and mining hub in the 15th century. Until a road arrived in 1926, Alpbach remained relatively isolated, resulting in its distinct style of architecture and well-preserved folk traditions.

Things to do in Alpbach

For insight into farming in the Austrian Alps, visit the Vorder-Unterberg Farm, which was originally built by local carpenters in the 17th century. It’s now occupied by the Alpine Farmers’ Museum with a recreated smokehouse, wood-panelled parlour and bedrooms decorated with antique wardrobes and chests. Also on the property is an old granary and a chapel, plus a barn filled with friendly cows, pigs and chickens.

In the winter months, you can take advantage of Alpbach’s well-groomed pistes, which cater to beginner, intermediate and advanced skiers. From the slopes, there are magnificent views across the mountains surrounding the Wiedersberger Horn. In addition to several ski schools where you can learn the ropes, there’s a halfpipe for snowboarders.

Once the snow melts, the slopes and valleys of the Kitzbühel Alps become a paradise for hikers, with a highlight being the summit trail of the Wiedersberger Horn. You can fly down the mountain on the Alpbachtaler Lauser Sauser alpine coaster or explore Alpbach’s quiet roads by bicycle. If you want to get a bird’s eye view of the area, launch yourself off the Wiedersberger Horn for an unforgettable paragliding flight.

Getting around Alpbach

Alpbach is around a one-hour drive from Innsbruck and Innsbruck Airport, which has seasonal flights to destinations across Europe. Renting a car is the most convenient way of getting to Alpbach and chair lifts ascend the surrounding slopes.
