Clustered with more than 700 traditional Korean Hanok houses, Jeonju Hanok Village is surrounded by the modern city of Jeonju. It’s been designated as a “Slow City” due to its relaxed pace of life and as a place where historic architecture and traditional culture meet.
Admire the unique design of the Hanok houses as you stroll through the streets, with slightly raised rooftops and two separate divisions where men and women dwelled independently. Visit the Hanok Life Experience Hall to learn about the innovative floor heating systems of the houses that allowed residents to sit, eat and sleep on the floor.
Soak up the views across the Jeonju Hanok Village from Omokdae, which is topped by a monument dedicated to the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, Lee Seonggae. One of the village’s most prominent landmarks is the beautiful Joendong Cathedral, which combines Romanesque and Byzantine styles. Don’t miss the Traditional Hanji Center, where you learn to make Korean paper.
Getting there
The Jeonju Hanok Village is a 10-minute bus ride from the centre of Jeonju or around an hour’s drive from Gunsan Airport. Seoul is around three hours away by train while Incheon International Airport is 3.5 hours.
