Things to do in Murighiol

Visit Halmyris, an ancient Roman fortification built by Emperor Trajan in 106 AD. It’s set at the mouth of the Danube Delta and is a fascinating archaeological site. Walking around the ruined stronghold, you’ll see the remains of curtain walls and defensive towers. Ancient artefacts like coins, ceramics and weapons have also been uncovered at the site.

Enisala Castle, also known as Heracleea, is another archaeological treasure. The medieval stronghold is perched on a limestone bluff and commands sweeping views over the Black Sea and Danube Delta. A paved road winds up to the castle and makes it easy to visit the ruins.

Explore a patchwork of rugged peaks, forests and flower-strewn meadows in the Măcin Mountains. At more than 450 metres tall, Tutuianu is the highest peak in the area. Hike to the summit for sweeping views over the surrounding landscapes. Low-altitude trails take you through sun-dappled beech forests carpeted in red peonies.

Head to the coast to swim, sunbathe and build sandcastles on Sulina Beach. Thatch-roof umbrellas dot the white sand and offer plenty of shade from the Balkan sun. Cool off in the Black Sea and order drinks from one of the beach bars. You’ll often see wild cows and horses wandering along the beach.
