Clustered with museums, cafes and bars, the Museumsquartier is a hub of cultural life in Vienna’s 7th district. It encompasses the former imperial stables designed by Fischer von Erlach and a series of Baroque and Modern buildings, which are now occupied by the Leopold Museum, the Kunsthalle Wien and Architekturzentrum.
Admire the impressive collection of 19th-century and Modernist Austrian artwork at the Leopold Museum, which is named for the collection’s owner, ophthalmologist Rudolf Leopold. A collection of 20th-century art is the focus of the MUMOK museum, where works representing the Expressionist, Pop Art and Photorealism movements are exhibited.
Browse the photography, film and new media exhibitions at Kunsthalle Wien or learn about Austrian architecture at Architekturzentrum Wien, then relax at one of the surrounding cafes. If you’re travelling with kids, visit the Zoom museum, which features an animated film studio, an adventure play area and creativity-focused exhibitions that change throughout the year.
Getting there
The Museumsquartier can be accessed from the Museumsquartier U-Bahn station or from the Volkstheater light rail stop. Vienna International Airport is about 30 minutes’ drive away.
