The east coast of Australia is practically synonymous with surfing. There are plenty of incredible surf breaks up and down the coast, but those in the know head to Merewether Beach in Newcastle.
Since 2009, the stretch from Dixon Park to Burwood Beach has been designated a National Surfing Reserve. The beach has also been host to the Newcastle Surfest since 2006. Experienced surfers can hang ten in competitive conditions, while others may prefer to relax and enjoy the swimming season at Merewether Beach. Lifeguard services are provided daily during the swimming season. The Merewether Ocean Baths, the largest ocean baths in the Southern Hemisphere, are less than a five-minute walk from the beach, as are the heritage listed Surf House and historic Ladies Rock Pool.
About four kilometres from central Newcastle, Merewether Beach is less than a ten-minute drive from the city. There is no public transportation directly to the beach, but the Watkins St Near Patrick St bus stop is a ten-minute walk from the beach.
Among Merewether Beach’s claim to surfing fame includes two famous residents. Malibu Surfboard Riding Champion Martin McMillan and four-time World Surfing Champion Mark Richards both call this corner of Newcastle home.
