The Heritage-listed State Theatre is the premier venue for concerts, dance, plays, comedy and performance art. It’s also home to the annual Sydney Film Festival and showcases innovative indie film screenings throughout the year.
The Gothic architecture of the State Theatre features a Neoclassical domed stair hall and a late-Gothic lobby with intricately carved wooden details. More than a dozen sparkling chandeliers dangle overhead, including a 3.5-ton cut-crystal chandelier suspended from the ceiling dome.
The foyer features a grand marble staircase and the walls are mirrored and draped in tapestries. Life-sized statues of King Arthur and St. George welcome visitors from the entrance hall. You can take a self-guided tour using a provided Acoustiguide handset.
Getting there
The State Theatre is part of the high-rise State Theatre Office Building on Market Street. The Town Hall and St. James train stations are within a 10-minute walk away.
