Overlooking the Chao Phraya River, Wat Arun, or the “Temple of the Dawn”, is one of Bangkok’s most famous landmarks. Its iconic prang dates back to the early-19th century and is majestically decorated with tiny pieces of coloured glass and Chinese porcelain.
Arrive during the early morning hours to soak up the peaceful serenity of Wat Arun as the sunrise reflects off its prang, then return to see the temple illuminated at dusk. Admire the ornate architecture of the Ordination Hall, which is beautifully decorated with colourful ceramics, murals and a golden Buddha image designed by King Rama II.
Climb the central prang to soak up sweeping views of the Chao Phraya River snaking below, then admire sculptures of Chinese soldiers and animals at its base. After visiting Wat Arun, cross the river by boat to see the immense Reclining Buddha at Wat Pho and capture magnificent views of Wat Arun’s prang along the way.
Getting there
Wat Arun is easily accessed by using one of the express boat ferries that cruise the Chao Phraya River and it’s just five minutes from the Grand Palace. Suvarnabhumi Airport is a 45-minute drive from the temple.
